One of the greatest perks of building a custom home is that you get to do just that—CUSTOMIZE.
And what better place to start than your master bedroom.
Think about it— this is the space where you begin your day. It needs to have a high level of functionality, AND it should inspire you.
It also happens to be the room you will retire to every evening. So it’s great if it relaxes and restores your mind and body.
That’s a high calling for any 1 room, but we believe it IS possible.
Check out some of these features that you can incorporate to personalize this important room in YOUR home.
1) Trey Ceiling
Nothing elevates the design of a room quite like a trey ceiling. It adds architectural interest with an artist’s flair.
Depending on the size and dimensions of the room an inverted or recessed ceiling can:
- Draw attention to a focal point such as a chandelier or ceiling fan
- Take away a “cavernous feel” in a large room
- Provide visual depth in a smaller room
- Add a simple elegance
There are numerous ways to design your trey ceiling with the use of multiple layers, colors, shapes, and lighting.
Talk with your builder about the type of ambiance you are looking for, and he can help you decide on a design that will achieve it.
2) Sitting Area
If you sometimes see your bedroom as a place to escape the busyness of the house, then you would enjoy a sitting area.
It can be architecturally created with a bump out, a step-down, or step-up—and it can be designed visually with specific furnishings in a spacious room.
Think about how you plan to use this area:
- As a reading nook
- A place to sit and chat
- A quiet spot to think or relax
- Somewhere to sit—maybe right outside your closet—so you can put your shoes on
- Another area to watch TV
Then consider how you can make it more inviting.
Perhaps you want to place it in front of a fireplace for a romantic touch. Or next to a built-in bookshelf for your own private library. Finally, if your room has daytime sun, a sitting area in front of a bay window will give you a spot to soak in all that natural vitamin D.
3) Custom His-and-Her Closets
Being organized and clutter-free is easiest when you’re set up for success right from the start. For many couples, having customized His-and-Her closets is a no-brainer.
Whether that translates into one very large walk-in with 2 tailor-made sides, or 2 completely separate closets, each with unique features, the outcome is the same— better use of space.
The organizational options are endless but include:
- Built-in countertop
- Adjustable rods and shelves
- LED light strips
- Built-in drawers
- Small desk or chair
- A window for natural light
When designing this part of your room, it’s best to filter your decisions through the challenges you have in your current closet.
4) Strategic Lighting
Bedtime rituals and schedules will vary—even between couples. But with smart technology, it doesn’t have to be an inconvenience. Strategically place your switches and outlets around the room.
Also be sure the main light has a dimming capability so that you can soften or brighten the room, depending on the need.
Perhaps you enjoy reading a bit in bed, but your spouse is ready to sleep the minute his head hits the pillow. Why not go for His-and-Her reading lights on either side of the headboard?
5) Transom Window
Like the trey ceiling, a transom window—placed high on the wall your bed is against— adds pizazz and style to your bedroom.
And natural light? You get plenty of it while keeping privacy a priority.
Transoms can be rectangular in shape—creating a frame for your bed. Or it can be an arch that draws the eye up. In either case, it’s a personal detail that can make your room more attractive.
6) French Doors That Lead to a Deck or Balcony
French doors add an element of indoor/outdoor living that is fresh and appealing.
Whether they lead to a spacious backyard, a welcoming pool deck, or a cozy balcony, no one can argue the benefits of:
- An extra dose of sunshine
- Easy passage to outdoor areas
- Visual interest upon entering the room
Depending on the space you can opt to have one set or multiple sets of french doors on one wall or throughout the room.
