Westmont Homes was selected by Green Builder® Media to build the Green Builder® VISION House Series – Orlando ’08. This demonstrative home was showcased during the 2008 International Home Builders’ Show, held in Orlando in February, 2008.
The Green Builder® VISION House Series is a sequence of showcase home projects produced by Green Builder® Media to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable design, construction and product selection. The third house in the Series, VISION House Orlando ’08, is a high-end architect-designed custom home, demonstrating that green can be not only glamorous, but also sustainable by considering durability and life safety in an active hurricane zone.
The construction of this home will incorporate the proper planning and use of products and construction techniques in order to insure the home is energy efficient, conserves water, has a healthy indoor environment and minimizes the impact on natural resources. The VISION House will be certified per the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, the Florida Green Building Coalition Standards, the Institute for Business and Home Safety “Fortified for Safer Living” Guidelines, and the Florida Water Star Program.
Since the VISION House is located on the shores of Lake Apopka, a main focus of the design and construction of the home focuses on water conservation, water reclamation and proper management of stormwater runoff. The VISION House will have cistern tanks providing 7,000 gallons of rain water storage capacity underground to be used for irrigation. A Hoot closed aerobic wastewater treatment system was installed to capture, store and treat waste from the washing machine, showers, sinks, and dual flush toilets. The processed waste water will be distributed through drip tubes to supplement the irrigation for sodded areas. In addition, the VISION House will implement Florida’s friendly landscaping principles as outlined by the University of Florida Yards & Neighborhood Program and finally, low-flow water fixtures and water efficient appliances will be installed.
Westmont Homes owners, Curt Roese (former owner) & Jim Rahman, are both proud and excited to be involved in this project and have started a new division, Westmont Green Homes, to focus on building certified green homes.
