“Modern Farmhouse” has become an extremely coveted residential-style—filling up Pinterest boards and spawning mega-fans of shows like HGTVs Fixer Upper

But what elements define this trend, and how does it differ from a more traditional country style?

In a phrase… It’s a perfect BLEND of traditional country

with more MINIMAL contemporary design.

(So YES, you can avoid that rooster print wallpaper your grandma had in her kitchen. 🤪)

While traditional country tends to lean towards kitschy and sometimes cluttered, modern farmhouse takes cues from the minimalist style and is more sleek and sophisticated.

In addition, the modern farmhouse style answers the current desire for comfort and warmth in the home by incorporating a variety of woods, textures, and fabrics—typically in a neutral palette.

Here are some clues that you’re on the right track toward this desirable design.

Metal Roofs

Metal roofs are a preferred choice for the modern farmhouse. They contribute to a streamlined aesthetic, and an attractive functionality since it is still one of the most durable roofing materials available. If you aren’t sure you want metal for the entire roof, incorporating it over just the front porch falls in line with the “look.”

Vertical Siding

Vertical siding, also called board-and-batten, is achieved by installing vertical boards overlaid with thin strips, called battens.

This can also be used on interior walls as paneling, along with shiplap, since most classic farmhouses would not have had drywall.

Not only is the “board and batten effect” appealing, but it is also very easy to maintain.

Front Porch

When you think about a farmhouse, it’s hard to escape the image of sitting on the front porch with a glass of sweet tea, enjoying the evening breeze.

Today’s modern farmhouse includes this focal point but also allows for a break from the traditional “porch rules.” You might choose to spread the porch across only the front of the house OR maybe just the back.

Wrap-around porches may have been the traditional option but they are certainly acceptable for the modern version, along with anything in between.

White is Right

Most modern farmhouses have white exteriors. Although not required, the white color serves the purpose of highlighting texture treatments like board and batten, emphasizing the high contrast created by the light and shadows.

The white exterior color also creates a beautiful juxtaposition with darker window options—steel is currently on trend—and dark shutters, black or brown, are popular color choices.

Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Details

The most important aspects of the farmhouse kitchen are big, bright, and open. The island should be large and inviting since it will be a place for prepping, gathering, eating, and visiting.

Marble is a popular counter choice but other options like butcher block or stone, work fine as well.

Industrial accents on fixtures and hardware are good choices to keep things sleek and modern while using reclaimed wood for open shelving, keeps things warm and cozy.

A farmhouse sink can be a place to put your personal stamp. There’s a variety of materials to choose from, including porcelain, copper, and stainless steel.

Just Right…

Modern farmhouse style is all about the BLEND and BALANCE of elements. If it’s too stark and modern,  you lose the warmth and softness. But if there are too many colors or busy textures you head towards kitschy. A modern farmhouse home is warm and welcoming while being practical and comfortable.
